Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon is the most famous natural day trip from Almaty for good reason. The Valley of Castles gives the landscape a sculptural quality: red sandstone towers, narrow walking routes, and open steppe above the canyon rim.

The route is accessible, but it still needs planning. Summer heat can be intense, and the best light usually comes earlier or later in the day. Give yourself enough time to walk inside the canyon rather than only viewing it from above.

Charyn works especially well as a first nature excursion because it shows how quickly Kazakhstan shifts from big city to vast geological landscape.
